PESICON 2025: Dr. Prabhu Karunakaran Shares Insights on Robotic Procedures in Children with VUR

The 20th National Conference of Pediatric Endoscopic Surgeons of India (PESICON) 2025, held in Kochi, Kerala, from February 14 to 16, brought together nearly 500 pediatric surgeons and pediatric urologists from across the country. The event served as a significant platform for discussions on advancements in pediatric endoscopic and minimally invasive surgeries.

Dr. Prabhu Karunakaran, a distinguished faculty member and exclusive pediatric urologist from Hyderabad, chaired a session on pediatric minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgical procedures in pediatric urology. His contributions to the session were highly valuable, particularly in the field of laparoscopic and vesicoscopic ureteric reimplantation, which are keyhole surgeries used to treat vesicoureteric reflux (VUR) in children suffering from recurrent urinary infections.

Robotic Ureteric Reimplantation: A Leap into the Future

Dr. Karunakaran emphasized the growing role of robotic-assisted surgery in pediatric urology, particularly for children with VUR. He shared his extensive expertise in robotic ureteric reimplantation, a cutting-edge procedure that offers enhanced precision, minimal invasiveness, and quicker recovery times compared to traditional surgical methods.

Why Robotic Surgery for VUR?

Vesicoureteric reflux (VUR) is a condition where urine flows backward from the bladder to the kidneys, increasing the risk of kidney infections and long-term damage. Dr. Karunakaran highlighted the key benefits of robotic ureteric reimplantation in managing VUR:

  • Enhanced Precision: Robotic systems allow for superior accuracy in surgical movements.
  • Minimally Invasive Approach: Smaller incisions lead to less pain and faster recovery.
  • Reduced Complications: Improved visualization and control help minimize surgical risks.
  • Shorter Hospital Stay: Faster healing times enable children to return to normal activities sooner.

The Future of Pediatric Robotic Surgery

As robotic technology continues to evolve, its application in pediatric urology is expected to expand. Dr. Prabhu Karunakaran emphasized that robotic ureteric reimplantation represents the future of VUR management, offering children a safer and more effective treatment option.

PESICON 2025 provided an excellent opportunity for knowledge exchange on cutting-edge advancements, and Dr. Karunakaran’s insights on robotic procedures were a significant highlight of the event.
